Calvinia parents sentenced for gruesome neglect of their toddler

The parents of a 5-month-old infant were recently sentenced in the Calvinia Regional Court for child neglect.

The 65-year-old father and 30-year-old mother were drinking with family in Calvinia when the 5-month-old baby boy burnt with a pot of hot food on his legs and stomach.

On 13 July 2024 the parents took the boiling-hot pot of food from the stove and placed it in the pram with the infant.

The baby burnt severely and was only taken to hospital the following day.

The couple was arrested and entered into a plea agreement with the state and sentenced for child neglect to 5 years, wholly suspended for 5 years.

Both the accused were also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

The baby was also removed from their care and placed in the care of a guardian.

The SAPS Management commends Detective Sergeant Jaco Swartz of the Calvinia FCS for his meticulous investigation that led to this sentence which is a clear indication that SAPS takes the safety of children serious.

GBVF remains a priority for the SAPS and officers will continue to sharpen their responses to crimes committed against the most vulnerable in society.
